BMW‘s second-generation iX3 just proved it has more stamina than anyone expected.
A team from the German automaker drove the electric SUV 626.1 miles from the Debrecen factory in Hungary straight to BMW headquarters in Munich, crushing the official WLTP range estimate of 497 miles.
The trip took serious planning. Six drivers participated, plotting the route like a Cannonball Run attempt to minimise stops, avoid traffic, and dodge stoplights wherever possible.
Road conditions were analysed beforehand. Every detail mattered because the goal was to squeeze maximum distance from a single charge.
The test used the iX3 50 xDrive, currently the only announced variant. It packs dual electric motors making 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque, good for 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.
The sizeable 108.7 kWh battery pack provides the juice.

Highways were completely avoided since higher speeds create more air resistance and drain batteries faster.
The team stuck to smaller, lower-speed roads where regenerative braking works most effectively.
Smaller 20-inch wheels replaced the available 21 and 22-inch options to reduce rolling resistance.
Creature comforts got sacrificed entirely. No heating, no air conditioning, no radio. Silence ruled the cabin.
Partway into the journey, someone noticed the low beam headlights were on, an oversight that wasn’t part of the original calculations but couldn’t be changed.
BMW stopped at the company buildings in Steyr and Landshut along the way. With 48 miles remaining, the iX3 showed 11% battery remaining.
When they finally rolled into Munich, cheering employees greeted the team. The battery read 2%, enough for roughly another 12 miles had they kept going.

The automaker specifically chose public roads over controlled track conditions to prove the iX3’s capability in real-world scenarios where customers actually drive. That matters more than sterile testing environments.
These results come with massive caveats. Nobody drives this way normally.
EPA ratings will likely land closer to 400 miles for American buyers who favour highways and faster speeds. European WLTP standards tend toward optimism compared to EPA testing protocols.
Still, the exercise demonstrates what’s possible when efficiency becomes the singular focus. Running low on charge? Get off the highway, kill unnecessary systems, slow down, and maximise regenerative braking.
The iX3 represents BMW’s most important electric vehicle in years, leading a new generation of EVs meant to transform the brand.
This range test shows the hardware can deliver when pushed to its limits, even if daily driving will never match these carefully orchestrated conditions.
