Volkswagen wants to sell you an EV that does not feel like homework. Enter the ID. CROSS.
It is small, neat, and looks like a car you have seen before. No spaceship doors. No gimmicks. Just a compact SUV with a cleaner, more modern twist.
The proportions are familiar, closer to the T Cross in size, but the details make it pop. Floating roof. Oversized 21 inch wheels. LED signatures that stretch across the nose and tail. There is even a glowing VW badge. Concept car sparkle without scaring off the average buyer.
Inside, things shift in a surprising direction. Out go the usual grey plastics. In comes pale Vanilla Chai upholstery, textured bouclé fabric, and eucalyptus leaves set into the console. The result feels more like a boutique Airbnb than a commuter car.
It is not all style. The boot swallows 450 litres. Drop the seats and you get a flat floor large enough for camping gear or even a nap on a long trip.
There is also a 38 litre storage bin under the rear seats plus a small frunk up front.
Performance is modest. One motor, 208 horsepower, front wheel drive. Zero to one hundred in under eight seconds. Range of around 420 kilometres. A top speed capped at 175. What matters more is the ability to tow. The ID. CROSS can pull up to 1200 kilograms, which means bikes, trailers, and more weekend freedom than most compact EVs allow.
This is where it makes sense. Not every EV should be a drag strip monster or a luxury statement. Volkswagen has built something deliberately normal. A car you could replace your Golf with tomorrow without feeling like you have taken a leap into the unknown.
Production is locked in for 2026, with pricing expected below the ID.4. It will slot in alongside the ID. Polo and Polo GTI as part of the company’s affordable EV lineup, a family of cars designed to pull more buyers into the fold.
Will the final version look as good as the concept? Probably not. But if Volkswagen keeps the warmth, practicality, and lack of pretension, the ID. CROSS could be the EV that finally wins over the fence sitters.
