It’s done. Volkswagen officially confirmed what many expected for a while now as the Touareg heads into the sunset.
Twenty-three years, 1.2 million units sold, and countless suburban family adventures later, the German giant’s flagship SUV is calling time.
Orders close in late March 2026, and before it disappears for good, VW is sending it off with a Final Edition that’s a bit more whisper than bang.
The Final Edition drops across every trim level with some laser-engraved lettering at the base of the C-pillars that reads, you guessed it, “Final Edition.”
Inside, the phrase is also embossed into the leather gear lever. There is ambient lighting across the passenger side of the dashboard and the illuminated sill plates carry the message as well.
It feels considered but not quite the sendoff you might expect for a nameplate that practically invented the luxury SUV segment when it arrived in 2002.
In Germany it starts at about $87,000 before options. The official photos show it in R-Line spec with dark blue paint, blacked-out trim, thin LED strips front and back, and black wheels that give it proper presence.
Inside you get the portrait-oriented central screen everyone’s seen by now, that flat-bottom steering wheel, black leather with white stitching, and all the usual modern touches.
VW used some oddly careful wording in the press release, calling this the end of the “Touareg combustion engine model.”
You don’t bring up engines unless something else is coming. They also kept saying “current Touareg” instead of just “Touareg,” which usually means there’s a replacement on the way.
Industry chatter points to an electric successor, likely badged as the ID. Touareg to match VW’s newer naming style that mixes EV labels with familiar nameplates.
The original Touareg launched alongside the Phaeton in 2002 as part of Volkswagen’s big push upmarket. The Phaeton didn’t make it, but the Touareg did.
Its platform siblings aren’t going anywhere either. Porsche is keeping the Cayenne alive into the 2030s, Audi’s updating the Q7, Lamborghini has a new Urus plug-in hybrid coming in 2029, and Bentley isn’t walking away from the Bentayga.x`
