Jaguar does not need another normal car. That part of its life is over, or at least that is the message coming from Coventry.
The old Jaguar, the one that sold saloons, SUVs and the F-Type to buyers cross-shopping BMW, Audi and Mercedes, has been put aside.
Now comes the gamble. The next big Jaguar will be the Type 01, an electric grand tourer expected to be revealed in New York this autumn.
It is not being pitched as a polite executive car or a cheaper alternative to German luxury. Jaguar is aiming much higher, with more than 1000hp, a six-figure price tag and a brief that puts it closer to Bentley, Porsche and Aston Martin territory.
That is a huge shift for a brand that has spent years trying to work out where it belongs.

Jaguar Is Walking Away From Its Old Life
The Type 01 is not just a new model. It is the first real test of Jaguar’s new identity. The company has wound down much of its previous range, leaving the brand in a strange pause while it prepares to come back as something more expensive, more electric and far less familiar.

That makes this car carry more weight than most launches.
Reports point to a large four-door electric grand tourer, built on Jaguar’s new electric architecture and inspired by the dramatic Type 00 concept.
Expected figures include more than 1000hp, a large battery, 800-volt architecture and fast-charging hardware designed to make the car feel serious in the company it wants to keep.
The price tells the story. This is not meant to replace the old XF or F-Pace in spirit. It is Jaguar trying to sell design, status and British luxury to people who might otherwise look at a Bentley, Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air Sapphire or a high-end Mercedes-AMG EV.
That is brave. It is also risky.

The Name Is Doing A Lot Of Work
Type 01 is not random branding. The “Type” part reaches back to Jaguar’s greatest names, including the D-Type, E-Type and F-Type. The “0” points to zero emissions, while the “1” marks the first model of the brand’s new era.

That history counts because Jaguar needs buyers to believe this is not just a rebrand with expensive paint.
The car has to feel like a real Jaguar, even without a combustion engine. It needs drama, presence and enough beauty to justify walking away from the old business model.
A 1000hp electric GT can win attention. The harder job is winning trust.
Jaguar is asking people to forget years of uncertainty and accept it as an ultra-luxury electric brand almost overnight. That is a lot to put on one car.
But if the Type 01 lands properly, it could give Jaguar something it has lacked for years. A clear identity.
Not another premium brand trying to keep up. A British luxury marque with something to prove.
